How shallow are you, traitor? (Doctors amid COVID-19 and injustices)

How shallow are you, traitor? (Doctors amid COVID-19 and injustices)
How shallow are you, traitor? (Doctors amid COVID-19 and injustices)

How shallow are you, traitor? (Doctors amid COVID-19 and injustices)

Animal, you begged him to come save you, to cure you of disease, to take away the pain,
You go on your knees when you need him, then stamp his head into the mud once your needs are met,
How shallow are you, traitor?
How shallow are you to not have compassion for someone that put himself and his kin in jeopardy for an unknown man.

Animal, this lot of society that is so concerned when they’ll be free of the contagion,
You sit silent in your homes with no voices for the unarmed soldiers left in slaughterhouses to be infested and fed on by an invisible foe,
How shallow are you, traitor?
How shallow are you to not care enough for the soldiers that are fighting your battle.

Animal, you who turns a blind-eye to the corpses piling from deeds of inhumanity,
You should hear the screams of pounding hearts in denial bawling before the dead bodies of those with their lives cut short,
How shallow are you, traitor?
How shallow are you to not stand up for the protection and safety of those that are going down as collateral damage in this great global war of man versus virus.

Animal, you who wouldn’t feel until the disasters come breaking into your households,
You must know that infantrymen had to kill each other because destiny had them on opposite fences while they’d have been best friends under different circumstances, had their blood not been poisoned by chants of false patriotism,
You must know that farmers suffer of poverty and starvation after feeding a million mouths of gluttony, had their minds been as devious as yours, they’d have survived,
You must know that doctors, nurses and healthcare workers die of disease after healing millions of patients, had they put their conscience away, turning away, aware of the dangers of contracting the infection from a dying person, they’d have been saved,
How shallow are you, traitor?
How shallow are you to not see that in that moment, the doctor looks Death right in the face and agrees to hold its wretched hand for the victim, when he knows he has the power of saving a life even at the cost of losing his own,
In that defining moment, his family, friends and all his dreams go into a blur in the back of his mind and he doesn’t care for the tragedy that can follow for helping a stranger,
How shallow are you, traitor?
How shallow are you to betray a soul that would go that far for you?

(This poem of mine is dedicated to Dr. Simon Hercules and other fallen heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is an Indian doctor’s poem against the injustices that prevail against his own even during these times of severe crisis (COVID-19). May the legacies of the heroes always be remembered and hailed.)
